Location of Program
Volta Region, Ghana
Ghana is one of the politically stable countries in Africa and is located in West Africa along the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population size of about 28 million people covering a land area of about 92,099 square miles.
Volta Region is located on the south-eastern part of Ghana sharing border with Togo and is naturally endowed with resources such as wildlife, rivers and lagoons as well as scenic plains and mountains.
Program Site
We have two main locations in the Volta Region, Ho Municipality (Urban Site) and Agorta in South Tongu District (Rural Site). Agorta program site is currently active and we are recruiting volunteers. Agorta is about two and half hours’ drive from the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. It’s about fifteen minutes’ drive from Sogakope, the Administrative capital of the South Tongu District. The District lies within the wet semi-equatorial and dry equatorial climatic zones, which are very good for livestock production and agriculture activities.
Agorta is a rural community along the southern part of the Volta River. The main occupations of the people in the community are agriculture, mat-weaving and fishing. It is about twenty minutes drive by boat to the Volta Estuary where the sand bars are nestling ground for some sea birds as well as endangered species of sea turtles.
The marshy mangroves ecology around Agorta is host to a wide variety of wildlife species such as oysters, gastropods, crabs, invertebrates, birds and fishes. The ecology also plays an important role as nursery areas for many species of fish and shellfish.
The location has a clear view of the south-western skies that allows a mesmerizing sunset from the property.
